Our Guest for the Weekend

is a bird.

Yep, that's right, we are housing a little pet bird for the weekend. We actually have an animal living in the Durbin house!



Her name is Moonlight and she came home from school on Friday with Emily. She is their class bird and the kids take turns bringing her home.



You should have seen how excited Emily was to bring this bird home. She actually wanted to bring home some of their other pets (a fish and a hamster, I think), but they were already taken. She was so desperate to bring home a pet, that she signed up for the bird.



She's not a noisy bird. She twitters a little and rings a little bell, but that's about it. She does bite so petting her is out of the question.

On the one hand, having this bird in the house reminds me how petless we really are, and how much the kids deserve to grow up with pets...like we did. She reminds me a lot of Pretty Bird (minus the personality. If you remember Pretty Bird, she was quite the unique bird!). But, on the other hand, having this bird cooped up in this tiny cage makes me sad. What kind of a life is she having?

So, because of Moonlight, I will get my kids a pet one day, but it most certainly will never be one that has to be kept in a cage.
