He laughed at me

See this guy...he looks kinda harmless (if you ignore the gotee and the flames on the hat) doesn't he?

But guess what he did...he laughed at me when I told him one of my goals for the year, for my 38th year. Laughed out loud and heartily. He didn't try to hide it; he laughed right in my face.

The nerve.

Okay, so he thinks it's funny, huh? He thinks it's funny that one of my goals is to have six-pack abs? Well, I'll show him. This summer. He'll see.

Starting on Tuesday! ;-)

Cruelty of nature

This summer I planted Impatien flowers around our front porch. I haven't planted flowers since we lived in Owensville all those years ago, so I was excited to finally plant some around this house.

I tended to these flowers every day, cleaning out the dead parts and giving them water. One day I noticed that the box closest to the steps was not thriving. Parts of the stems were turning yellow. I couldn't figure it out until I took a good, close look at the flowers. That's when I found this:

We threw the first one away, but overnight a new one was in it's place and in it was and egg. It was like she knew if she deposited a baby bird in the nest, I would leave it alone. She was right. Eventually, there were two eggs.

One day, Emily came into the house (she had a habit of checking the eggs every day) and asked what the goopy thing was that was in the nest. Goopy thing??? Sure enough, that goopy thing was a brand spankin' new baby bird.

Not long after, there were two goopy things in the nest. We were excited. For weeks, I sacrificed my wonderful flowers so this bird could have a safe haven to hatch her babies. We couldn't wait for those goopy things to grow feathers and eventually fly away.

Several days go by and Emily (again) came in and told me the baby birds had flown away. I had to explain to her that that wasn't possible because the babies didn't have feathers yet; they couldn't even open their eyes. "Then why are there feathers all over the flowers?" We went to the nest and, alas, there were lots of feathers and no babies and no mama bird (she was never far away). We assume a cat or a hawk got ahold of them.

But, how sad is that? We did everything we could to keep those birds safe, and in the long run, these birds fell victim to the food chain. Those little lives were taken while we slept and life continued like it was no big deal. They didn't even have a chance.

Nature is beautiful to look at and enjoy, but boy can it be cruel.

The best gift

is the one that comes from the heart, and this gift is just as priceless as they come:

Denise made this for me when at her Brownie troup function.
It says, "Thumbody loves you...and that thumbody is me!" and those are her thumbprints around the petals of the flowers. And on the back is her name and the date.
How sweet is that!

A little girl's birthday

We celebrated Denise's 8th birthday today with candles...

gifts...

and cake and ice cream

Could the groundhog be wrong?

Not sure I remember the last time it was warm enough for bike rides and rain boots in early February...

And later this week it's supposed to be in the 60's...could winter be over????

My 38th Year

That's what my new scrapbook is going to be called. There is a "movement" in the scrapbook world to take one picture for an entire year. It's called Project 365, and I am going to attempt the project and I'm going to call it "My 38th Year." So, I took some pictures yesterday and I think my first picture will be of the flowers Ray and the girls gave me for my birthday:
They were sitting on the counter when I walked in the backdoor and I could smell them; their fragrance was that strong. Of course, the flowers were accompanied with 2 cards and a gift card to The Running Spot for a new pair of running shoes.
I really liked this close-up shot of the rose, but I wanted to use a picture of all the flowers to remind myself of what the boquet really looked like.
So, my celebrations included a party with my fellow teacher-friends on Friday, dinner at a neighbor's house (we share the same birthday) on Saturday, and today we are going to Liza's house to celebrate Denise's birthday (we also share the same birthday).
Today starts my 38th year...looking forward to all it brings (hopefully more good than bad!) :-)

They were right...for once!

We finally got snow and lots of it! The girls and I found ourselves with a sort-of mini spring break. Four days off from school has been a wonderful reprieve. I know it hasn't been that long since we had 2 weeks off for Christmas, but there is just something hard about teaching during the winter...at least for me, anyway. During the winter months, I struggle to drag myself out of the house every day. Maybe it has something to do with the lack of sunshine...don't know, but I just want to hibernate and each year it gets harder and harder.

But, thanks to this snow, the girls finally got to use their snowsuits and boots and hats and gloves, and boy did they play. The were out there in the snow for up to 4 hours a day (not consecutive, mind you) having a great time with their friends sledding on our hill (yet one more reason I am soooooooo happy we live here!).
And, thanks to the snow, I got my first opportunity to use my new telephoto lens Ray bought me for Christmas.

I made them pose on Tuesday before they even began playing.
Here they are with Samantha (the girl who lives directly across the street)

After sledding down the hill, Hannah was stopped by a bunch of branches and was happy she didn't crash.

They both found themselves face-down in the snow on several occasions...

I had a better one of Hannah with the snow caked to her eyelashes and eyebrows, but there was also spit (or maybe even snot) all over her chin...kinda took the "cute" out of the picture!

Then they started going down the hill on one sled...

That worked until both Hannah and Emily ended up hurt on separate occasions. Riding together was banned until they figured out a new way of going down the hill together...

on their butts! They even named this path "The Butt Slide."

After getting bored of this, they started going down "The Butt Slide" on their stomachs.
After a while they grew tired of climbing back up the hill, so they would come in and play in the basement. Once their snow stuff was warm and dry, they would go out and play some more.
Overall, I am so happy that we got these four days of bliss. The kids played their little hearts out and I got some grading and lots of lots of housework done. I can't wait until the next big storm!
